It took until 1991 before rugs from the Azilal province were mentioned in a publication. They feature simplistic geometric shapes and patterns with dashes of vibrant colors always on a cream background. Only performed by women of this region, Azilal rugs are made according to a cultural ritual that mothers are passing down to daughters for generations. Over the past 15 years, Azilal rugs have attracted a great deal of attention both in the decorative market and for art-loving collectors.
The authentic pieces of this region are becoming increasingly rare, since the tribes settled down at the end of the 20th century and the production was oriented towards decorative carpets, often more stereotyped and less qualitative.
